Woodtype Sculpture

I was inspired to create this piece after my visit to the Hamilton Wood Type museum. I started by ordered as much random wood type that I could find, mostly from eBay. Next, I took each piece and cleaned it with mineral spirits to remove dirt and old ink. Some people were surprised that I wanted to remove the old ink. At first, I didn't but I found that it was actually still wet and was finding it all over the place! After I had nice and clean pieces I began putting the pieces in a random array with the larger pieces in the center and the smaller pieces fading out slowly.

The biggest challenge to this piece was assembling it together. I had to keep the puzzle together, but remove small sections, glue them over night on a vise and then repeat. Eventually I had to get all the pieces together in a very similar manner. Last, I mounted a small piece of wood to the back that would serve as the wall mount. Today, it's mounted in our living room. It's not for sale. :)
